Lokassa Ya Mbongo, born Denis Kasiya Lokassa, was a legendary Congolese rhythm guitarist and composer whose influence on African music is undeniable.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lokassa became one of the most celebrated musicians of his time. His work as a rhythm guitarist and band leader has left an indelible mark on the Soukous genre, a style of music that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Lokassa passed away on March 15, 2023, at the age of 77 in Nashua, New Hampshire, USA, after battling diabetes and complications from a mild stroke he suffered in 2020.

Early Musical Journey with Afrisa International

Lokassa Ya Mbongo’s musical journey began in the late 1960s when he joined the African Fiesta National band, later known as Afrisa International, led by the iconic Tabu Ley Rochereau.
